“Battery Swapping policy: The good and not so good aspects for EVs”

By Venkat Rajaraman, CEO and Founder, Cygni

Currently, more than 50 percent of small EV batteries in India are fitted with low-quality Battery Monitoring Systems(BMS). Under the new swapping policy, such cheap hardware will go out of the door as the policy mandates all swappable batteries.

“Battery swapping policy needs to look into these points too”

By Venkat Rajaraman, CEO and Founder, Cygni

NITI Aayog’s recently released draft battery swapping policy signals a dawn of a new era for the eMobility in India.

There are a few areas that are left open, and the draft policy doesn’t address them fully. Closure on these is very important for adoption to take-off. The first one is the standardization in terms of the battery dimensions, connectors, size, voltage, etc.

“2022 insights- Breakthrough in Indian Battery technology”

By Venkat Rajaraman, CEO and Founder, Cygni

Lithium-ion battery picked up pace in the mid-1980s where three professors, John B. Goodenough, along with Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshio got Nobel Prize for inventing the lithium-ion battery. Basically, there are two predominant cell chemistries. One is LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) and the other is NMC (Nickel, Manganese Cobalt) cell. Both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. The battery itself is a trade-off among various parameters. Typically, the tradeoff happens across multiple verticals. And you do the tradeoff between the energy density, the safety, the long life, faster charging, and all of them. This is a tradeoff.

Cygni, an EV manufacturing company, too is doing its bit in keeping up with the pledge made by our PM. The firm is encouraging its employees to go for Electric Vehicles and is sweetening the deal with many offers. Venkat Rajaraman, CEO and Founder, Cygni says, “We have always been ahead of the technology adoption curve and we believe that we would continue to be the early adopters of such breakthrough technologies.

Cygni Energy Private Limited selected as a Winner of  IET India “The Mobility Award 2021” for contribution towards Indian Engineering and Technology.

IET India (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) is the most relevant and most preferred institution for Engineering and Technology professionals with over 13,000 members (largest membership outside of UK).

The battery swapping as a service or battery energy operator is typically compared to the gas cylinder service in India or to the service provided by mobile operators. The mobile handset (EV) is different from the mobile service provider (Battery as a Service) and the same model might work in the case of battery swapping for EV.
